I love the prismacolor pencils. They lay down beautiful color, blend well and are great for beginners as well as professional artists. I also have a set of Faber Castell polychromos and like them just as well. Loved your site, and totally agree with all that you have said. I have been a colored pencil artist for about 30 years and have bought and tried many brands, but I always return to my favorite Prismacolor.

I personally SWEAR by PRISMACOLOR Premier 150, ever since I bought a well used, but complete set of 48. An art student needed some quick cash, and I bought them for $20. I still remember being thrilled by the intensity of the colors. At that time, you could still get the Cadmium Colors, and the yellows were SUPERB. (They’ve managed to make decent substitutes for the Cadmium Reds and Oranges, but the yellows are as pale as flat Lemonade. Sadly that means that the Classic and Necessary Day-Glo Chartreuse for Leaves and Limes and sunny, green grass? I think they’re still available in acrylics and oil paints, but not in our soft core, Artist’s Grade Prismacolor pencils. One last thing…if you are looking for Artist Quality Metallic Pencils, the best ones are SPECTRUM NOIR METALLICS and FABER-CASTELL METALLICS. They come in a decent range of colors, and both of these Metallic sets have COPPER…, which PRISMACOLOR has discontinued. The Metallics go on smoothly, and blend nicely.

Looks like I am way behind on this discussion. Wanted to put in a great word re: Derwent Inktense pencils. I have all colors purchased over a three year period and absolutely LOVE them. Strong colors blend well with water and so much fun to work with.

I agree with your Crayola review. I find they are too waxy. I used to prefer the Laurentian brand before they went out of business. I miss those inexpensive pencil crayons

In reply to Pam. In a good or bad way. I love crayola. I disagreed on them calling Prangs recommended. Crayola are much better.
