Hi Matt,

Can you provide more detail on how you add contrast and depth to the walls of the buildings? I understand that you layer color on, but how do you apply it, and what colors do you choose for it?

Loving this lesson. Amazing how the color does all the work when you learn how to use it. Looking forward to trying this one.

Hi Jeff,

A better approach would be to prepare the surface before hand with gesso and perhaps some acrylic medium if actual physical texture is what you're after.

This is brilliant, Matt! I love the effect of pastel drawings and am excited to start trying to master the use of pastels. My main problems with other mediums are that I focus too much on detail and I work too tightly thereby putting too much pressure on myself and losing the enjoyment of creating. I love impressionist art and I hope that using pastels will help me draw more loosely and create art that I am more interested in. Thanks Matt. You do make it look easy, though! I need to keep at it until I’m happy with the outcome.

Really great lesson; it looked intimidating but as always, you clear the way for success. I learned a lot & managed to get the perspective correct.
What is the purpose of blocking everything in with the dark grey? I also find a few pencil "landmarks" along the way very valuable & the blocking does away with those. I forgot to do it with the second group of buildings I don't see a difference.
Thanks.

I absolutely love this video. I have always been afraid of this kind of scene. But you explained it, and worked the painting perfectly so I can understand. Thank You
