I am trying to make it darker. So for instance I was playing around with the colors knowing that the cherries on the bottom have a bit of a purple hue to them. I wanted to see what would happen if I tried some magenta and ultramarine blue which gives a pretty muted purple. I didn’t apply it as a thick paint. But it also wasn’t watery. I guess I wasn’t sure what I expected. It just made me think hmm is it guesswork? I guess it could be flare from a light. Is that one of the reasons people prefer easels? Because it’s vertical and the lighting distributes differently?

This is interesting. It sounds as though you are glazing a color on top of what you already have down. Perhaps when the paint is wet, it is reflecting some light and making the wash appear lighter than when it dries. Acrylic paints typically dry to same color and value as they are when wet. Are you trying to make the color lighter or darker when you apply the washes?

I have a question about acrylics and I’m not sure if it will make sense. I’ve been watching the videos of this cherry exercise and attempting on my own. With lesson 2 the colors I’ve been laying down as kind of a wash. It doesn’t appear that I’m doing anything but making the painting wet. I know it is hard to not see what I’m talking about. But when the paint dries you can then tell there is a hint of a color change. I guess I’m having trouble trying to plan what I want to do because it seems like when I lay it down nothing happens. does that even make sense? Then when I get up walk away and come back to it, it seems like it looks totally different.

No, I don’t think I did. But, I may have used some medium to slow the drying time.

Did you use any glazing medium on the cherries? It looks so reflective. Acrylics mostly do not dry so shiny.
